WHAT IS
WRIST PAIN

Wrist pain is usually the result of repeated work-related activities leading to overuse or a specific sporting trauma. Repeated movements cause the tendons to overload causing inflammation & pain. Other traumatic events can strain or rupture ligaments, fracture bony prominences or entrap nerves leading to inflammation, weakness and restricted movements. The physio will test the wrist for imbalances in range of motion, joint stiffness and ligament laxity. Swelling and muscle spasm can be noted & managed. Serious pathology is imaged to differentially diagnose. Imbalances can then be managed with manual therapies and other modalities eg exercise, acupuncture, ice or heat. Predisposing factors will be addressed to prevent recurrence.

OTHER SYMPTOMS

- Swelling and pain along the tendons, redness or bruising

– Limited movement or stiffness, weak grip

– Pins and needles in the hand or fingers.

DO'S AND DON'TS

Do ask your physiotherapist, GP or sports physician about your condition, don’t ignore it! It can worsen and lead to severe symptoms and further disability.

TREATMENTS

- Diagnosis and explanation of your specific condition

– Management of swelling and recovery to full range of movement of the elbow joint

– Massage / joint mobilization

– Stretching and strengthening to prevent further weakness & reoccurrence

– Ice & electrotherapies

– Dry needling and western acupuncture

– Bracing to unload tendons

– Xrays organized if necessary

– Referral for anti inflammatory medication from your GP if necessary
